virginia. four people are dead. four others injured after three deadly attacks just 20 miles apart. the books and began in manassas. that is where someone attacked six people and that is anti locations. -- in 2 locations. >> courtney robinson has developing details. >> it all began around 7:30 last night on hood road in manassas. four people were shot and then 40 minutes later the officers found another scene. according to manassas city police, it was inside of this town house on hood road where a gunman on loaded on a family, shooting four, including the juvenile female. >> at this time there are no words to speak about somebody getting shot on a rampage. it's cold hearted. >> 40 minutes later, blocks

apart, two more victims in this house on brent street, one of them female, suffered a machete wound. >> we don't believe there's another crime that will occur from this single incident tonight. we believe it was a motive of the one person we have in custody, but we have to determine what that is. >> officers to say that these are isolated incidents. they do not believe that any more violence will continue in manassas. they have the person responsible in custody. we will continue following this and bring you the latest. live in manassas, courtney robinson, abc 7 news. investigators are searching for clues in the deadly home invasion in sterling. it happened at 8:30 last night on east kennedy street. someone broke into a house and tried to rob everyone inside. a fight broke out and two people

were shot. >> we are trying to establish if there's any relationship and whether they knew each other and exactly what the details are in the case. we are still putting this together. >> one person died and a second in critical condition. a third person in the house was a salted and is in good condition this morning. the crisis in egypt is expected to escalate this morning. a massive gathering for morning prayers in tahrir square could be the last bit of quiet left today. protesters determined to drive out president will bolick are furious that he is not stepping down. this morning the military threw its weight behind mubarak's plan to stay in office. mike joins us in a satellite center with the latest developments. >> under the protestors have moved to the presidential palace. others have formed a human chain around the cabinet and state television headquarters in an effort to force mubarak to step

down immediately. after a meeting of the armed forces supreme council run by the defense minister, the leaders endorsed mobile oppose the plan to stay, calling for a peaceful transfer of power and free and fair presidential elections later this year. they also supported its promise to lift the country's state of emergency in the current status -- when the state of security requires such. huge numbers of protesters are more determined than ever as this uprising enters its 18th day. meanwhile, president obama is questioning whether mobile's transfer to power -- whether statement on the transfer to power is sincere. abc 7 news reporting. back in this country, some

of the people who may take on president obama next year will speak with conservative activists today. republican congressional leaders and will estate mogul donald trump spoke on the first day of that conference. he said that he may make a white house bid in 2012. arizona republican john kyle says that he will retire when his term ends in 2012. this came a day after virginia democrat jim webb announced he would not seek reelection next year. five senators announced plans to leave office when their terms are finished. metro board members are considering cutting late-night service on weekends to save money. the trains currently run until 3:00 a.m. on friday and saturday nights. metro is considering shutting down service at midnight on those nights. that would help close the $72

i am with fellow cast members from "cymbeline playing at the shakespeare theatre company through march 5. we invite you to see shakespeare's spellbinding fairy tale. >> good morning, washington. 10 minutes after the hour. freezing temperatures made for a scary ride on an oklahoma city highway. these are razor sharp bicycles that are just hanging from this pedestrian bridge. a tractor-trailer nearly knocked one of them down. authorities shut down the highway so the crews could remove the icicles. it was from water on a broken pipe on the bridge. a dangerous situation. time to check traffic and

their biggest demonstration yet, a gas main is the focus of an investigation into wednesday night's explosion in allentown, pennsylvania. five people including a baby were killed. if latin two houses and set several others on fire. flattened. detectives are scheduled to testify in laetitia frazier murder case. police are still looking for her body. a maryland moratorium on executions will stay in place. the state rewrote the rules for legal injections, but officials want them to be revised because one of the drugs used is no longer available. a 2006 ruling says new rules need to be approved before the executions can resume. dwi competing budget plans are making their way through the

virginia general assembly. the senate passed its version yesterday and the house approved its version. amendments approved in the house are for the funding of public broadcasting and would prohibit funding for planned parenthood, which provides abortions. -- and would pull funding from public broadcasting. rob nelson past news. >> the days of super bowl mortgage rates are over. the average rate of a 30-year loan rose above 5% this week for the first time since last april. higher rates could put a drag on home sales coming off the worst year in more than a decade. president obama delivers three options to congress today outlining the future of fannie mae and freddie mac. the proposals would reduce or eliminate the government's role in the mortgage market. bailing out the firm's has cost taxpayers $160 billion.

blockbuster is reportedly planning to put itself up for sale after failing to reach a deal to exit bankruptcy protection. the chain could sell at $300 million. lines were shorter than expected for the verizon iphone. analysts still think sales will reach 1 million by sunday. that is your money scope report and i am rob nelson. 6:17. the long journey to justice for sandra levy is almost over. nearly a decade after she disappeared, the man convicted of the murder will be sentenced for the crime. ben eisler outside superior court has a preview. >> prosecutors have asked that ingmar guandique receive life in prison without parole, but we expect the defense to ask for a new trial. let me give you background first. you may remember john lee disappeared in 2001 while jogging in rock creek park. police did not find the remains until dna had eroded, so it

ingmar guandique not be linked through didfall into evidence. prosecutors say that the man already served time for attacking women in rock creek park in 2002. while serving that time, he allegedly confessed to a cellmate that he murdered sandra levy. the defense will want to get a new trial because reportedly some jurors share notes during deliberations. that would be misconduct. ingmar guandique to this day maintains his innocence. ben eisler reported from the courthouse, abc 7 news. traffic and weather every ten minutes. adam caskey is here. what can you tell us? snow lovers should close their eyes for the 74 cast. -- 7-day forecast.

no delays system wide from metrorail. they had an earlier situation reported at the silver spring metro station. that turned out to be not a big deal. everything is moving on colesville road, and all trains on remember inal service. let's go back inside. >> thank you. our top story this morning -- a violent night in northern virginia. three deadly shootings within 20 miles leave four dead, four others fighting for their lives this morning. we begin in manassas, where police are questioning one person in two related attacks. >> courtney robinson is live with the developing details on this. good morning. >> good morning, allison. we can tell you, according to man san city police officers, they say the rampage began here on hood road around 7:30 last night. officers say four people were shot, two were killed, two others wounded, including a juvenile girl. they are, of course, in the hospital recovering at this point. about 40 minutes after that, officers discovered another

incident blocks away on brent street. they believe the same person killed another man and injured a woman with a machete. manassas officers also tell us they do have a person responsible in custody. they believe that person did know these victims, and they say these incidents were isolated and that they were related as well. of course, we're going to continue following this and bring you the latest. we're live in manassas this morning, courtney robinson, abc 7 news. >> thank you very much. also new this morning -- investigators searching for clues in a deadly home invasion in sterling. a fight broke out on east kennedy street last night. two people were shot, one died at the hospital, another is in critical condition. a third person who was assaulted is in good condition. there is no word on any suspects. police are searching for a gunman who robbed two university of maryland students. this happened early yesterday morning along knox road in college park. police say the robber approached the students and

demanded money from their wallet. they complied, and he took off. police are asking anyone with information to contact them. 6:32 is the time, and the crisis in egypt could escalate today. egypt's military has now thrown its weight behind president hosni mubarak's decision not to resign, but to transfer most of his powers to his vice president. you can see how crowded it is in that live picture. some fear today's announcement could further enrage all those protesters. >> we've been tracking the story all morning long. mike, what is the latest? >> hundreds of protesters have moved to the presidential palace, others have formed a human chain around the cabinet and state television headquarters. it's all an effort to force mubarak to step down immediately. military leaders have endorsed mubarak's plan to stay, calling for a peaceful transfer of power and free and fair presidential elections later this year in september. they also supported his promise to lift the country's

30-year-old state of emergency when the current security situation permits it. the statement came several hours after mubarak refused to resign. instead, he handed most of his powers to vice president omar suleiman, who raging protesters pleaded for the military to take action. they're also urging the u.s. to help. >> where is american help? >> only american -- >> in response to mubarak, president obama issued a written statement, saying we urge the egyptian government to move swiftly to explain these changes and to spell out in clear and unambiguous language the step-by-step process that will lead to democracy. the statement did not mention mubarak by name, and it said the egyptian people have made it clear there's no going back to the way things were. reporting live in the satellite center, mike, abc news.

yesterday they told congress that while al qaeda continues to be the top threat to the u.s., it's almost impossible to rank all the threats. they also say there's a growing danger of home grown terrorism. alison? new details are emerging in that scandal surrounding former congressman christopher lee. the new york republican reportedly sent a shirtless photo of himself to a woman through craigslist. she told news21.com she was shocked to learn he was a married congressman instead of a divorced lobbyist. lee resigned hours after that scandal broke on wednesday. former schools chancellor michelle rhee faces scrutiny over her record. on a blog, there was a study that includes test scores from the baltimore school where rhee once taught. she says the information showed that rhee lied to try to make gains and her class look more impressive than they actually were.

in calvert county, 13 degrees now. let's give you a look at the list around the area right now. one of our weather maps displaying live data around the region. these numbers are cold. 9 degrees in frederick right now. 13 at washington dulles. 12 in gaithersburg. 21 in annapolis. we'll stay cold all day, but we have a chance of hitting the 40 degree mark. so the range, upper 30's to lower 40's by early this afternoon. satellite features not a lot to see, just a few clouds passing to the north. as high pressure settles in overhead, most of the weather services will stay far to the north and far to the south, and that bodes well for lots of sunshine and a warming trend, too. so finally, after highs only in the 30's for the past several days, 40 to 44, the general metro range, probably upper 30's. and then a warm-up right through this upcoming weekend with the warmer temperatures, a good time to get outside and soak up a little vitamin d. everybody's been hunkered down with the winter temperatures.

>> a coming up tonight -- chocolate is booming in d.c., creative new products, new flavors, even a chocolate tour. it's this week's time for d.c. chocolate lovers to join us tonight at 5:00. >> it is now 6:44. a convicted killer is back in court today to learn his fate. a jury found ingmar guandique guilty of murdering federal intern, chandra levy, back in november. but the case isn't over yet. we have a preview of superior court. >> prosecutors have asked that ingmar guandique receive life in prison without parole, but we expect the defense to ask for a new trial.

we'll get to that in just a second, but let me give you background first. levy disappeared in 2001 while jogging in rock creek park, but by the time police found her remains, d.n.a. had eroded, so guandique could not be linked to forensic evidence. prosecutors, on the other hand, had made two key points. first, guandique had already served time for attacking women in rock creek park in 2002. second, while serving that time, he allegedly confessed to a cellmate that he killed levy. earlier, i mentioned the defense will request a new trial. the basis for that defense, for that request is that apparently, reportedly, some jurors shared notes during deliberation, which would be a case of jury misconduct. guandique, for his part, to this day maintain his innocence. reporting at the courthouse, ben eisler for abc 7 news. the man accused of driving a getaway vehicle has pleaded guilty. jamie pleaded guilty to second

degree murder in the death of william bennett. he and his wife cynthia were attacked while they were walking. cynthia bennett was critically injured. three other people also face charges. only on 7 this morning, d.c. police are now looking into why one of their cruisers was illegally parked in a handicap spot for an extended period. here's the photo that shows the fourth district cruiser in a handicap space at the parkway deli in silver spring. a man who uses a wheelchair says he waited in the lot for more than 20 minutes wednesday night, but the officer never returned to the cruiser. >> there were no lights. there was no one in the vehicle. the car was turned off. the lights were off. it just seemed that it was just another person parked there, and it did bother me. >> we found that in most local areas, illegally park nag handicap space carries a $500 fine. the police department was able to find out who parked the cruiser there, but at this

point, it has not released that officer's name. at 6:46, frustration over the cries in cairo. we're joined live for a look at the u.s. response to everything that's happening. so fluid there, even this morning. good morning. so yesterday, president obama was sort of riding this wave with everyone else, getting information and then reacting. what do you say about how things have been handled so far? >> well, they really did seem to get their hopes up yesterday. they say that they were getting strong signals from people in the government head of political party that he was going to go, that he was going to step down. so you had this very sort of upbeat statement by the president that we're on the cusp of a major transformation and history is being made and so forth. then you had media reports -- we shouldn't leave out the media's part in this, which means there were major news organizations reporting they were also having sources tell them mubarak was going to step down. and then you have this meandering, defiant speech,

where, if he did make a concession about turning over power, it was one clause and one sentence near the end, and most of the translators seem to miss it entirely or give it short shrift. >> your expectations weren't met. what's your take? you've been covering egypt since the very beginning. what's your take on mubarak's speech yesterday? >> well, i thought it was interesting the way he -- once again, he blamed foreigners and outside influences, suggested that people were taking advantage of the young people. but it didn't seem to go down very well with the protesters at all. they're not that young, for one thing. he kept talking about, i'm your father and so forth, and it did seem to be breeding some resentment. for the first time, i think he sort of had a very wide spread feeling that he was getting from a lot of commentators that he was beginning to lose touch with the reality of the situation. i think the white house viewed it in a similar kind of way. >> that speech further goldened protesters. >> there's no question about that. >> josh, thank you very much. have a good weekend. >> thank you.

time for weather and traffic every 10 minutes. doug hill is standing by with the latest on our forecast as we head into the weekend. happy friday, doug. >> happy friday, alison and pam. it is going to be a good weekend and a good trend going forward the next several days around here. that is if you like warming temperatures, tired of the cold, at least i am. i like what we're seeing here. let's give you a look at chesapeake beach, kind a wakeup look at the bay. beautiful colors in the sky. it is going to be a nice string of days here. 28 degrees in chesapeake beach right now. at reagan national airport, temperatures, 25 degrees. and a look live back across the river, back into the city this morning, the river is pretty cold. adam went through the weather bug network and found some temperatures that are just unbelievably cold. 7 degrees in woodwine in howard county. 8 degrees in frederick. 8 degrees in adamstown. the winds are calm everywhere. temperatures are cold, but they will start to warm up. the center of high pressure will be moving overhead today and off to the east, and that's going to allow the winds gently

turn south and south of west. 13 in bowie right now. our average high, 45 and 29. yesterday we only hit 34. today we'll be a good seven to 10 degrees above that, so we're going to be in fine shape. record low for washington set on this day in 1899. 40 to 44 degrees, that's where we're headed today. the days are getting longer. in fact, 31 more minutes of daylight just between now and the end of the month. so it's all going to be good. weekend forecast is timed, no worries about storms, no strong winds. a little bit breezy saturday and sunday, but comfortable. 46 degrees on saturday. highs of 52 degrees on sunday. the news gets even better than that next week, and adam will share that coming up in just a couple of minutes. have a great weekend, alley sofpble >> you, too. adam even said 60 degrees possible. we're all looking forward to that. doug, thank you. reece lisa, your turn? >> minor crash in montgomery village avenue.
